Red Wine Benefits
Many red wine enthusiasts around the world enjoy the taste of a beautiful red wine with their dinner, but can red wine have health benefits as a bonus as well? Surprise surprise, there may be a reason to keep having a glass or two of red wine!
Red wine benefits actually go further than merely enhancing the flavour of certain foods.
There is a chemical compound in red wine that is called resveratrol, and over the last few years has
gained a lot of interest over the last decade or so. It is all edged to have many anti-aging properties that have got scientists, and red wine enthusiasts, very excited. Experiments on lab mice has shown that when injected with resveratrol, the aging process in the mice virtually stopped!
Is this the only thing going for it? Actually, resveratrol is just one of the benefits. Red wine also have heaps of antioxidants as well. By having these antioxidants, the body raises the levels of "good" cholesterol which protects the body against damage to arteries, thus lowering the risk of heart disease. And this is all from something you normally enjoy anyway!
So what are these antioxidants? These are a group of chemicals called polyphenols and
come in two forms: flavonoids and non- flavonoids. Their main benefit appears to be to protect the lining that is inside your blood vessel. Resveratrol is one of the key ingredients and it also helps by lowering the "bad" cholesterol in the body, thus preventing the formation of blood clots. However, more research will need to be done first, but it looks very promising!
Before you start buying red wine by the case, you should be cautioned first. Any doctor will tell you that too much alcohol will actually have very harmful effects on your body, particularly the liver. Even though doctors realise all the red wine benefits, they will also recommend that consumption be kept to no more than 2 glasses of red wine per day, preferably only one. However, one or two glasses of red wine at dinner is usually all that is required to fully appreciate and enhance the taste of dinner, so as long as you keep to that, you should also enjoy the health benefits as well.
What if you don't drink alcohol, either for religious reasons or some other reason? Does this mean you miss out on the health benefits? Today, drug and supplement manufacturers have managed to produce a synthetic and condensed form of resveratrol and able to put it into a capsule where it will dissolve. This way, you can enjoy the red wine benefits without actually drinking red wine!
Red wine benefits are numerous, and not just for enhancing the taste of food. If consumed in moderation, there are certain health benefits where heart disease risks are lowered. It can also help with increasing the body's "good" cholesterol and reducing the "bad" cholesterol and reducing the chances of blood clots. Remember, moderation is the key to reaping all the red wine benefits that are on offer!
